Any stay at Castledene would certainly not be complete without a visit to the nearby Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve.  Noted for being the largest natural woodland in Britain, this 220 hectare woodland and grassland area is home to the endangered red squirrel, roe deer and badger as well as a multitude of exquisite plants, flowers and grasses.  In summer months, the fragrant flowering of the orchids is a particular attraction as is the rock rose within the grassland areas.

With over 12 miles of public walkways, there are hiking and walking routes to cater for all fitness levels and degrees of difficulty whilst taking in both the geographical and historical features of the reserve.  In fact, specific parts have remained intact for more than 10,000 years – the spectacular limestone cliffs and gorges, for example.

A further area of natural beauty is the Durham Heritage Coast, an 11 mile pathway stretching from Seaham to Crimdon, and forming a route along breath taking scenery and panoramic views across the North Sea.  The lively harbour town of Seaham is particularly renowned for its dramatic cliff top location views of the harbour and sandy beach below, but also has a heritage and visitor centre as well as a wide variety of cafes, restaurants bars.

Durham itself is a fascinating combination of cultural heritage, natural landscaped beauty spots and quaint retail facilities.  Why not climb the 300+ stairs of the Cathedral tower and reward yourself with a 200ft high view of the local landscape?
